The number of modern rock bands pillaging from the early ’80s continues to increase exponentially, but ‘Antics’, the second album from New York’s Interpol, confirms they’re still a cut above all in the elegance of their steals. Think the Psychedelic Furs, Television, Peter Hook basslines. Interpol have produced a soaring, inventive album that, while incorporating the deliciously dark atmosphere of turn on the bright lights, merely uses it as a base to create more ambitious, warmer soundscapes. Some of the dark atmosphere has been lifted and replaced with more optimistic and melodic themes. A magnificent next step on the road to stardom.
