A really cool record from keyboards Dewey Jeffries – a set that’s noteworthy not just for his own music, but for some early vocal work from a young Vanessa Rubin! The set’s got a slinky mix of jazz fusion and soul – plenty of solos from Dewey on a variety of keyboards, plus some flute, trumpet, and trombone from Randel Moroz – all recorded with a lean, laidback vibe that really fits the indie spirit of this sort of record during the period – kind of a more homegrown take on the territory of artists like Ramsey Lewis or Rodney Franklin! Jeffries also sings a bit too – the album’s a mix of vocal and instrumental tracks – and titles include “Mother To Me”, “Onetha”, “Priscilla’s Theme”, “I Have Cursed The Moon”, “Little David”, and the very groovy “Shake Your Ass”.
