Three years after the release of their last full-length album Volume Three: Burrowing Kingdoms (Overdrive Records, 2022), comes Addendum Two, the second chapter in the duo’s sludge-metal spin-off EP series (aptly called Addendum, released between their full-length albums). A side project that delves into the synthetic elements that have always enriched their sound, but now more contextually woven into the overarching narrative. Building on Volume Three, the duo continues to explore new sonic boundaries, allowing themselves the freedom to deviate from the framework used in their main albums.
The five new tracks presented by The Sarge and The Wülff provide a soundtrack for a mini board game that revisits three episodes from the saga set on Erion and Ktolon. The setting draws inspiration from vintage science fiction (Ursula K. Le Guin, Frank Herbert, Ray Bradbury) with a fantasy and DIY-punk twist. The synth-driven soundscapes evoke dungeon-synth with a more cosmic-kraut breath, with incursions into industrial and dark-ambient territories.
Addendum Two is not just an “interlude,” but a full immersive experience. The packaging references old Sega Mega Drive cartridge cases and includes a cassette, three game cards, a die, and a tarot card drawn from three variants.
The game cards feature small dungeon-crawler-style adventures, complete with maps and mission rules, playable either solo or in teams. Players will need to survive enemy onslaughts and lurking threats at every corner. An all-in-one package that will fully immerse the most curious into the Hyperwülff universe.
New sonic and narrative boundaries are drawn through Addendum Two. The experiments, as well as the storytelling, add an extra layer to the existing saga.
